Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to your questions about Cygnus Track GPS tracking.

Mapping FAQs

For map data, what is the preferred format of the data?

The preferred map data file format is Shapefile (.shp). We can work with just about anything, but this is the best format and is recognized as the industry standard.

How detailed is the mapping data?

Cygnus Track ships with royalty-free US and world data. While not "premium data," it is very accurate and is sourced from the United States Census Bureau. Premium data providers charge from thousands to hundreds of thousands for their data, depending on the number of users accessing it and for only minor improvements in data quality. Cygnus Track can be configured to use data from these premium providers; however, we recommend trying the free data as we feel you will be satisfied with it and find it a good way to keep down costs.

International mapping data is as accurate as the source of the data; we can help you find data from nearly any region on the globe and if the data doesn't exist, we contract with providers to create it from satellite imagery. If you have any questions about our mapping data or how you can get maps for your region, you may contact one of our knowledgeable sales representatives and they will be happy to assist you.

Where can Cygnus Track be used?

Cygnus Track can be used virtually anywhere you can find supported hardware devices and cell phone providers. We currently have devices being used in the continental United States, South America, the Middle East and other locations around the globe. For locations outside the United States, we will need to acquire detailed street data, hardware to match the frequency of the local cell providers, and cellular data services. If you have questions about choosing the right network provider, hardware, or where to obtain the mapping data, please contact one of our knowledgeable sales representatives and they will be happy to assist you.

What mapping software does Cygnus Track use?

Cygnus Track is based on the ThinkGeo Map Suite mapping controls and uses royalty-free U.S. and world data. The advantage of this data is that it truly allows you to be free of monthly charges or yearly royalties that are commonly incurred from premium data providers.

We already have maps. Can we use them?

Yes, ThinkGeo can integrate any map data into Cygnus Track (please note that additional charges apply).

We don't have maps. Can ThinkGeo provide them?

Yes, ThinkGeo works with several map data providers and has map data available from everywhere in the world.
